Ontario government helps consumers make a better move
TORONTO -- May 2, 2005 -- For many Ontarians, spring is the season for starting life in a new home. Whether you are moving across the street or across the country, Consumer and Business Services Minister Jim Watson reminds you that being prepared is your best way to make that move.
"Finding a reliable mover can take time and effort, but it´s worth it to avoid trouble down the road," said Watson. "We are educating consumers to help them avoid fly-by-night companies that may try to take advantage of them."
The government received more than 380 calls, letters, emails and visits in 2004 from consumers who had complaints and inquiries about movers. Billing disputes, lost or damaged items and overcharging were among the most common complaints.
Watson offered five tips to keep in mind when hiring a moving company:
- Get estimates from at least three companies.
- Never accept an estimate over the phone. A reputable moving company will want to inspect your furnishings before preparing a quote.
- Ask for references - and call them.
- Compare written estimates and make sure you understand the details, such as insurance, packing fees, extra services and exclusions. Remember that the cheapest service is not necessarily the best.
- Don´t rely on anyone else to move important records, documents, deeds and jewelry - carry them yourself.
When the McGuinty government´s Consumer Protection Act (CPA) comes into force on July 30, it will offer consumers more protection when dealing with household moving businesses. The CPA will require these businesses to stick to within 10 per cent of price estimates set out in their agreements with consumers.
If you have a complaint about a mover, try to resolve the issue with the business directly. To complete an online complaint form or learn more about how to protect yourself, visit the
