Sixty days to a new era in protecting consumers and businesses
Ontario government to help consumers and level playing field for business with new Consumer Protection Act
TORONTO -- June 1, 2005 -- Minister of Consumer and Business Services Jim Watson reminds Ontarians about the countdown to the launch of legislation that will strengthen the province´s new consumer protection regulations.
"The Consumer Protection Act is part of the government´s plan to safeguard the rights of consumers and promote a competitive economy in Ontario,"
Watson said. "Establishing a clear set of rules that have the strength to protect consumers and the flexibility to encourage business growth is good news for Ontario´s economy."
Compliance with the new legislation, which comes into force on July 30, 2005, will make Ontario a national leader as a safe and informed marketplace.
This act applies to most goods and services and includes new rules concerning:
- Disclosure in consumer agreements
- Consumer remedies, including longer cooling-off periods
- Amendments, renewal or extensions to consumer agreements and contracts.
"The new measures we are bringing forward support a strong economy and will give businesses a level playing field on which to compete, strengthening confidence in Ontario´s marketplace," Watson said. "We are modernizing consumer protection legislation to educate and give peace of mind to consumers, because smart consumers are good for business."
