Court News: Justice for Ontario Consumers

The Ministry of Government Services attempts to resolve disputes between consumers and businesses. If you require assistance with a consumer issue and/or are unsure whether your complaint falls under this ministry's consumer protection legislation, please contact the Consumer Services Bureau at 1-800-889-9768 or in Toronto at 416-326-8800 or by e-mail at InfoMGS@mgs.gov.on.ca . You can also access our online complaint form here.

In 2005, the government consolidated and updated six existing consumer protection laws: the Business Practices Act, the Consumer Protection Act, the Consumer Protection Bureau Act, the Loan Brokers Act, 1994, the Motor Vehicle Repair Act and the Prepaid Services Act. The new Consumer Protection Act, 2002 outlines the rights, responsibilities and remedies of consumers and businesses in Ontario.

Prosecutions in 2005 under consumer protection legislation administered by the Ministry of Government Services, resulted in a total of 45 months in jail terms, 675 months of probation, $600,000 in fines and more than $300,000 in restitution orders. Altogether 986 charges were laid.
